Pulling together a book with Libre Writer

I have been scanning and transcribing letters. I have started thinking of gathering them with a TOC and index. Google Docs is where the result of that are, however it does not support embedded documents; Neither does Apple pages. Microsoft Office 365 might be a last resort, but I remembered another. My family tree software, GRAMPS, supports reports in LibreOffice. Found some documentation showing it could do some of the things I am trying for. (Please forgive me for overlapping with my previous blog entry.)

Created a template with Title, Copyright, TOC, Chapter, Index, header/footer.
The TOC seems to work.
Went back and played with an early page break, using insert instead of ctl+enter  to ignore page numbers on title pages.
Created a master (book)  magically with that template.
Not quite sure how I finally got the template in the manager.
I had failures with it and some extension template I downloaded.

Learning to use the navigator, F5, helped expedite deleting the indexes from the chapter files. Sweet. As I add more Chapters it will be even more useful.
Just when I thought I had it down, I realized I lost my headers and footers on my chapters were disappearing when I deleted the TOC.
I created a new Page style and learned how to manually use it:
(Styles > Manage Styles > Page Styles (from header icons nor Page from right icons)
It's a bit of a hack since I have to change something for each chapter. Is it the page break?

I've learned to be careful in what I copy and paste from google docs as you can get some weird results with the picture and horizontal bar.

playing with the file for indexes got me confused about pathing too. It seems to me it should be with the document rather than in some software data path.

Ooh, can I conditionally show/hide scans/transcriptions? YES

I have encountered several issues with the generated index:
  • Added to index. Katie P. vs Katie and Jim C.
  • Dear <variable name list> is going to give me unintended hits
  •  All vs all
Nothing like skipping through the documentation to get to the good stuff.

I sent a one chapter book to my uncle for review...

Drop me an email with your google authorization if you want to look at it.
